Ceramics, embroidery, glass: craft and industrial products can now have an EU geographical indication
Decreto-Lei n.º 194/2026 makes INPI the body that receives applications to protect the geographical names of craft and industrial products, with registration valid across the European Union.

Decreto-Lei n.º 194/2026 (Portuguese decree-law) of 25 September implements Regulation (EU) 2023/2411 in Portugal. The geographical name of a craft or industrial product can now be protected across the European Union, as was already possible for wines and agricultural products. The preamble gives jewellery, goldsmithing, clothing, weaving, embroidery, ceramics, glass and basketry as examples.
How registration works
Registration has two stages, one national and one European. The decree-law governs the national stage:
